Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I connect to my nio Tag?
Firstly, download the FREE nio app from either the apple app store or the Google Play store onto your smartphone or tablet.

Check to make sure that your nio Tag is charged. To do this use the USB connector provided. Once fully charged the red charge light will automatically switch off.

Switch on your nio Tag. It will beep and flash blue once to indicate that it is now on and connectable. You should then press the ‘add a nio’ button on the home page of either the nio Chain, or nio Locate app.
  1. How does nio Chain work?
Nio Chain works by running software on your smartphone/tablet that communicates via Bluetooth 4.0 with one or more nio Tags. nio Tags can be secured to almost any item you want to protect and form a wireless chain between your tagged item and your smartphone/tablet. If your nio Tag or your smartphone/tablet move to far apart the wireless chain breaks and they both alarm to alert you of a potential loss or theft so that it can be prevented.
  2. What is a wireless chain?
The wireless chain is at the heart of the nio Chain app. The wireless chain is used to set a perimeter around your nio Tag that causes the nio Tag and smartphone to alarm if they become separated. The length of wireless chain can be adjusted to increase or decrease the perimeter.

You set the wireless chain based on your surroundings. If you are in a high-risk environment (subway, coffee shops and other meeting places) you may want to keep the chain short. This will shorten the security perimeter and cause the system to alarm before it gets too far away from you. If you are in a low-risk environment (your home, office or hotel) you may want to make the chain longer, giving you greater freedom of movement away from your tagged item.
  3. What is the range of the wireless chain?
The wireless chain has an operational length of between around 1 meter and 25 meters, depending on the environment in which nio is being used.

nio Chain has been designed to react to the environment that it is in based on the perceived risk. For example, if you are in a room full of many people or obstructions and cannot directly see your tagged item, then the wireless chain will be tighter than if there were no people or obstructions in the same room. The ranges are therefore only guidelines and can also vary between smartphone and tablet models.
  4. How do I change the wireless chain distance?
Simply drag the slide on the nio Chain home screen. The further the slider moves to the right, the longer the chain and the further your nio Tag and smartphone can be separated before they alarm.
  1. How can I make my nio Tag alarm more quickly once outside my wireless chain breaks?
The speed with which your nio Tag alarms once the wireless chain is broken can be set using the alarm delay. The delay can be used to avoid false alarms that might be caused if you happen to break your wireless chain for a few seconds. The minimum alarm delay is 2 seconds. The maximum delay is 20 seconds. To modify the alarm delay select nio Chain from Launch Pad and then press the Settings button. The Settings options screen displays the alarm delay slider that can be adjusted. The further the slider moves to the right, the longer the alarm delay.
  2. I've disconnected and my nio Tag is still alarming. How can I stop it?
Move the switch on the nio Tag to the off position.
  1. What's the battery life on the nio Tag?
When fully charged the nio Tags battery can last up to 4 months if left in standby. On an average use your nio Tag will last up to 1 month. To conserve battery you can also switch your nio Tag off.
  2. How can I tell how much battery life remains on the nio Tag?
The nio app has a battery indicator that tells you how charged the battery is for each nio Tag added to your system. Once the battery reduces to 20% the nio app will display a reminder. It will do this again once your nio Tag battery has 10% remaining.
  3. How long does the nio Tag take to charge?
When fully depleted your nio Tag will take approximately 40 minutes to charge.
  4. Can I overcharge my nio Tag?
You cannot overcharge your nio Tag. Once the tag is fully charged the charge light will go off and the battery will automatically stop charging.
  1. Will nio run in the background on my smartphone or tablet?
    Yes.
  2. Can I connect to more than one nio Tag at a time?
Yes. With the current version of nio you can connect to 1 nio Tag and 1 nio Soft Tag (this is your tablet, or another smartphone). We’ll soon be releasing an update for nio that allow you to connect up to 10 nio Tags at the same time with nio Chain and any number of nio Tags with nio Locate.
  3. Will the nio Tag work in water?
No. If your nio Tag becomes submersed in water remove it immediately and allow it to dry. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE TAG. Drying make take over 24 hours depending on environmental conditions. Attempt to connect to the nio Tag using your smartphone/tablet. If this fails then the tag is beyond repair and must be replaced.
  4. Will nio work on the Tube, or where there is no mobile phone reception?
Yes it will. Unlike GPS tags, each nio Tag communicates directly with your smartphone/tablet and does not need any phone reception, satellite, or communication tower to operate. This makes it an ideal security companion inside shopping malls and on underground public transport.
  5. Does my smartphone/tablet have to be Bluetooth Smart Ready to use nio Tag?
Yes, nio Tag will only work on Bluetooth 4.0 handsets. See our Compatibility page for more information.
  6. Will the wireless chain length vary in different environments?
Yes, nio Chain has been designed to react to the environment that it is in based on the perceived risk. For example, if you are in a room full of many people or obstructions and cannot directly see your tagged item, then the wireless chain will be tighter than if there were no people or obstructions in the same room. The ranges are therefore only guidelines and can also vary between smartphone and tablet models.
  7. Can I use other Bluetooth devices on my mobile whilst using nio Tag, such as my headset?
Yes, nio Tag will not interfere with other Bluetooth devices and has been tested to work with most Bluetooth headsets.
  8. On which smartphones and tablets does nio Tag currently operate?
